PHILIPPINES

MANILA    BORACAY BOHOL   PALAWAN

Adventure-seekers and beach-lovers alike will fall in love with the Philippines. There’s something for every traveller here – from bustling cities, UNESCO World Heritage sites, picture-perfect beaches, mountain ranges, volcanic lakes, cascading waterfalls, winding rivers, 2,000 species of fish and 400 species of coral.

The dry season (November to May) is the best time to visit, with March, April and May typically the hottest months; even in the wet season later in the year, visitors can enjoy plenty of warm, sunny days. As well as the pristine beaches and clear blue waters, there’s plenty of history and culture to discover and explore here; from ancient tribal villages to colonial churches and relics.

The people here are some of the friendliest you’ll meet, and you can expect a warm welcome whichever island you visit. Filipino culture is a diverse blend of Malay, Chinese, Middle Eastern, American and Spanish influences, and more than 150 dialects and languages are spoken here, although English is the most common. As a result of Spanish rule here between 1521 and the late 1890s, the vast majority of the population is Roman Catholic, and this is the largest Christian country in Asia.

MANILA

Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is a densely populated bayside city on the island of Luzon, which mixes Spanish colonial architecture with modern skyscrapers. Intramuros, a walled city in colonial times, is the heart of Old Manila. It’s home to the baroque 16th-century San Agustin Church as well as Fort Santiago, a storied citadel and former military prison.

BORACAY

Full of life and with a vibrant party atmosphere, Boracay boasts a great selection of restaurants and bars, as well as some of the most picturesquebeaches in the Philippines. There’s no airport on the island; resorts are reached by ferry from Caticlan Ferry Port and then a short road transfer. Boracay is blessed with 13 amazing beaches, with five-kilometre White Beach the most famous. You’ll find the majority of the island’s bars, restaurants and shops along the beach. Enjoy a cocktail while relaxing on the sand, or perhaps engage in a game of beach volleyball or football. Those looking for a more relaxed beach experience should try tranquil Puka Beach, while the waves off Bulabog Beach make this a haven for water sports fans, with excellent windsurfing and kiteboarding to be enjoyed here. There are more than 20 diving sites dotted around the island’s shore, with other water sports including windsurfing, water skiing and snorkelling.

A relaxing way to enjoy the scenery is to take a paraw (outrigger) boat ride around the island to take in the idyllic views. Back on the shore, the party goes on all night, so why not indulge in another cocktail on the beach?
